One of the core characteristics of the Loshenka is its unique tail. Whether you're looking at the normal tail for the breed or its mutated counterpart, Rapunzel, every Loshenka has a tail that is significantly different from that of other horse breeds. Because this is an important trait of the breed, we wanted to create a quick guide to help explain some of the differences between these tail types!
Please try to follow these guidelines in good faith. There is some wiggle room for stylization, but passing is ultimately up to staff discretion. We just want to make sure the breed's core traits are recognizable! If you have any questions about a certain pose, please feel free to ask in #help-channel.
OVERVIEW
-
Loshenka tails are generally at least somewhat wavy or curly rather than straight. Their finer hair holds texture better than normal horses.
-
All Loshenka tails are held away from the body, with a gentle downward curve through the middle that ends with the tip of the tail higher than the lowest point of the curve. Their tails cannot physically bend the opposite way or hang straight down like a normal horse's tail.
-
Loshenka tail hair has roots all along the top/sides of the tailbone, not just at the base of it! It should have hair flowing down from the entire length, and should be parted along the top of the tailbone.
-
When drawing foals, these guidelines still apply, but the proportions may be a bit different. Foal tails also have more flexibility in general, so feel free to play around a bit. Just keep them looking Loshenka-y!
NORMAL / NON-RAPUNZEL
-
Length: Starting at the withers, the end of the tailbone (stretched flat) should end somewhere along the croup. See image below.
-
Natural Posture:
-
Held away from the body, sloping into a downward curve in the middle, then back up.
-
Most comfortable position (based on end of tail) is between the height of the back and the belly.
-
-
Range of Motion:
-
Can be raised/"flagged" slightly, but will not flag as high as an Arabian, for example. More outward than upward.
-
Can be lowered, but the end of the tail should not stop below the belly's lowest point.
-
Can move from side to side, but cannot curve tightly enough to hug the side of the body.
-
Cannot double back on itself, whether up or down, as to go between the legs or over the top of the back.
-
RAPUNZEL
-
Length: Starting at the chest, the end of the tailbone (stretched flat) should end around or past the butt. See image below.
-
Natural Posture:
-
Held away from the body, sloping downward in a loose curve with the end of the tail coming back up slightly.
-
Most comfortable position (based on end of tail) is between the height of the belly and the hock.
-
Overall, this tail is much heavier than non-Rapunzel tail, and is carried "long and low" as a result.
-
-
Range of Motion:
-
Can be raised slightly, but cannot physically be lifted higher than the horizontal line of the back.
-
Can be lowered, but the end of the tail should still be raised up a little. The tailbone itself will not rest on the ground, though the hair may.
-
Can move from side to side, but cannot curve tightly enough to hug the side of the body.
-
Cannot double back on itself, whether up or down, as to go between the legs or over the top of the back.
-
Does not have as much compressive flexion as a normal Loshenka tail. Curve is noticeable, but should not be tightly U-shaped.
