Eun-byul paced the corridor outside the surgical wing of the Salthamn Equine Clinic, her arms folded tightly across her chest. Through the observation window, she could just make out Mimmi, already sedated and prepped, lying on her side as the surgical team worked with practised precision. The sterile smell and the quiet hum of equipment only deepened her unease. Svea had driven them that morning, her usual sarcasm replaced by a calm steadiness that Eun-byul hadn’t known she needed.

“It’s routine,” the veterinarian had assured them. “A laparoscopic ovariectomy is minimally invasive, and we’ll monitor her every step of the way.”

Even so, seeing Mimmi unconscious, her powerful body limp and motionless, sent a sharp sting through Eun-byul’s chest. Two hours later, the veterinary nurse returned, removing her surgical cap with a tired but satisfied smile.

“She did beautifully. The full tumour came out cleanly along with the ovary, and she’s already waking up in recovery. No complications.”

Relief washed over Eun-byul like a wave. “Can I see her?”

“Soon. Just give her a little time to fully come around.”

Later that afternoon, Mimmi stood groggily in her stall, a thin dressing covering her flank. Her eyes were glazed but soft, and when Eun-byul whispered her name, the mare leaned slightly into her voice. Recovery, as promised by the veterinarian, was steady. Antibiotics and pain medication were administered on schedule, and Eun-byul spent hours each day sitting by the stall, brushing Mimmi gently or simply reading a book beside her. By the second week, Mimmi’s coat had regained its shine, and her eyes tracked movement without panic.

But the biggest change was subtle: there was no more pacing when a foal nickered, no frantic calling. The chaos inside her was slowly quieting. Eun-byul first noticed this when a neighbouring mare unexpectedly gave birth, and Mimmi, for once, didn’t react at all. That evening, the staff at Lysehamn celebrated both the new foal and Mimmi's optimistic improvement.
