Mack looked up from where he had posted himself on the fence, scratching at his chin with his pencil and a faint smile coming over his face as he watched the mulish and conceited stallion get denied by the golden mare with a mask. He understood, getting turned down by a pretty girl always had a way of hurting his feelings, but getting ignored by them had a way of breaking a man’s heart. 

The stallion bobbed his head, arching his neck and throwing his fit in a way that made you wonder where they got the idea for a rocking horse. Not that the stallion could get far anyways, not with the fence between him and the two mares. 

The large cremello didn’t so much as sniff his direction as she continued her grazing tauntingly close, her tail flicking as if mildly annoyed. Ladyfingers, despite her focused attention on the stallion, didn’t move from where she stood by Mamma but her attention hadn’t been enough to ease the stallion anyways. Nor did his behavior convince her to come any closer.

An impressive roar from The Boss made the young man look back up from his writing, nearly dropping his book as he started to climb down- just see the appaloosa huffing and puffing as Mamma moved further away from the fence and turned her back to him while she grazed. Just behind her, Ladyfingers lifted her flaring nose with swiveling ears- whinnying in The Boss’ direction as he pawed at the ground with his front hoof. 

Mack shook his head and scribbled out his ‘but i’ and nearly went to redact the note about him being nicer but stopped himself. He huffed to himself before he started writing again.

‘I think ol Joe called it in, lest fer now, he eint bin in the pin with him since Boss got a bite o him. He think hes rite Boss cant be rode and been talkin bout turnin hi m into a gelding… I aint gone give up fast as the ol man did. I think i can spare the Boss his jewls a lest.’

The Boss had finally seemed to give up for a moment though, huffing as he finally lowered his tail and turned his nose down to rip up the grass and chew on. Looking up, Mack noticed a harrowing blue eye staring right at him. They made him think of the windowpane art at the church, pretty… but even those glass panels made the hair on the back of his neck stand up in the same way the stallion’s eyes did. 

As if the stallion could smell the fear, he raised his head to look more pointedly at the young blonde with the devilish smirk etched onto his face. It felt like the same critical stare Joseph would give him when he knew he had done something wrong… but hadn’t figured out what he had done.
