Phase 2 - Past and Present

Gravel crunched under the tyres of the veterinarian's car as it pulled into the property. Eun-byul stood waiting by the stable, letting Mimmi graze on a loose lead rope. The mare shifted her weight constantly, her nostrils flaring as she eyed the approaching vehicle with suspicion.

“I feel like she’s been calmer today,” Eun-byul told Svea, who stood beside her. “But the moment she hears a foal or any other horse actually, she still goes into a meltdown.”

The veterinarian, Klara, stepped out of her car with practised ease, lifting a large case from the backseat.

“Afternoon! Is this the lady of the hour?” she asked cheerfully, nodding toward Mimmi.

“Just so you know, she’s not great with strangers,” Eun-byul warned, tightening her grip as Mimmi sidestepped nervously.

“No problem,” the vet said gently. “Let’s take it slow and if it gets too much for her, we'll sedate. I want to assess her general health, conduct a blood test, and use the ultrasound machine for further examination. Given her history and behaviour, I want to rule out any organ issues.”

Eun-byul blinked. “You think it could be medical?”

“I'm thinking it could be hormonal,” Klara clarified. “Mares that act obsessively around foals sometimes have something affecting their hormone production, such as granulosa cell tumours. These are ovarian tumours that disrupt hormone production. But let’s see what we find before we make any assumptions.”

They led Mimmi into the stable that Svea had cleared out. The mare pawed the ground, her tail flicking anxiously, but she allowed Eun-byul to soothe her while the vet unpacked the machine.

“It’s okay, Mimmi,” Eun-byul murmured, brushing her hand along the mare’s neck and face. “You’re safe, you’re safe.”

Klara worked quickly but calmly, explaining each step as she palpated, then listened to lungs and heart, took blood tests, and eventually brought out the ultrasound probe. The screen flickered to life, showing grainy black-and-white images. For 5 minutes the group stayed completely silent as the veterinarian moved her hand around Mimmi's belly.

“There,” the vet said, pointing. “That’s what I was afraid of. See that large, round mass on the left ovary? That’s definitively a granulosa cell tumour.”

Eun-byul felt her stomach drop. “What does that mean for Mimmi?”

“She’s not in pain, but the tumour is producing excess testosterone which is making her body think she’s constantly cycling, or even pregnant. That could be the reason for her obsessive behaviour with foals. It also explains her aggression and anxiety.”

“Can it be treated?” Svea stepped in while Eun-byul patted Mimmi gently.

Dr. Klara nodded. “Surgical removal of the affected ovary is the gold standard. Once the tumour is out, most mares settle dramatically. Her hormones will stabilize, and you’ll likely see a completely different horse.”

Eun-byul looked at her Loshenka, who was now standing still, her eyes set on the veterinarian but her body slightly less tense. She stroked the mare’s cheek gently. “We should book it as soon as possible.”

“I agree,” the vet said with a soft smile. “I’ll get you a referral to the equine clinic in Salthamn. It’s a straightforward surgery, and with how much you’ve already done for her, I think she’ll pull through just fine. I will also send you the aftercare advisory by email.”

As the vet packed up, Eun-byul sighed and leaned against Mimmi and whispered, “We’ll fix this. You don’t have to feel like this forever.”

Event: 2025 Loshenka Makeover
Phase Number: 2
Horse ID#: 6430
Issues: Feral Broodmare, Foal-napper
Description: This mare was used for breeding but was never properly handled. Her lack of handling and socialization has made her wary and difficult to manage. Now retired from breeding, she exhibits obsessive, anxious behavior over others’ foals. She will attempt to steal foals from their dams and gets very worked up if she hears or sees a foal that she can’t get to.
