A week had passed since Eun-byul brought home her first rescue horse, Mimmi, and they had spent most of the days simply getting to know each other. Eun-byul saw it as a priority that the mare would be easy to handle and lead, and she wouldn’t settle for a horse that others would need to be careful around. Mimmi had been isolated from other horses and people for most of her life, and while she craved attention, she didn’t know how to handle or act on those feelings. Svea had suggested that they start introducing Mimmi to other horses through the pasture fence, to begin with, and when she found a friend, they could go together. Although Eun-byul was sceptical about introducing the mare to any foals, her friend still pushed the idea, stressing that positive reinforcement would help.

“We could try it for just a couple of minutes, and every time her behaviour is non-aggressive, we reward.” Svea put forward during breakfast.

"Alright... But if it becomes too much for Mimmi, you have to help me bring her in."

After mucking the stables that day, the friends went and fetched a mare and foal from one pasture and moved them to the field right next to Mimmi. At first, Mimmi seemed more curious than anything else, ears pricked and nostrils flaring as she watched the newcomers. The foal tottered closer to the fence with her mum close behind, all gangly legs and nickering. But as the tiny creature stretched out its neck, attempting to sniff Mimmi through the rails, something in the mare’s posture changed. Her muscles stiffened, her tail swishing hard. She gave a shrill, warning snort to the dam, who pinned her ears and kicked forward in return.

“Okay, okay,” Eun-byul murmured, stepping in quickly.

Mimmi was trembling now, eyes wide and frantic, trotting back and forth along the fence. Before anything could escalate, Eun-byul slipped on her halter and led her away.

“We tried, Svea, but she’s not ready yet.”
