What happened to the two foals on April second can only be described as a tragedy.

Sugar Plum Fairy, also known as Clara, was expected to have twin foals on May second. Vets littered the property of Whispering Grove Equine Facility to ensure no matter what happened, the foals born would be safe. Thank god for that.

It must have been two in the morning when Clara’s child birthing cries could be heard echoing throughout the facility. Her mate, Frozen In Time, also known as Cavalier stayed by her side the entire time.

It had to have been around three in the morning when vets finally arrived. When they got there, the first foal was crowning, and Clara was in a great deal of pain.

No one knows how long it took the first foal to pop out, but when it finally did, it was a weak and frail thing. Two vets, Mandy and Julie took to it, rubbing towels on the poor limp body, hoping it would take its first breath.

Mandy’s arms shook as she tried to clear the foal’s nostrils of placenta fluid. Julie began trying to remove the umbilical cord. Mandy sighed and shook her head. This foal wasn’t going to breathe.

Just as the pair of vets gave up hope, the little dark colored foal took his first breath. The room exploded with joy as the little thing stayed in Mandy’s lap. Mandy felt a rush of adrenaline, and with it, fear.

The foal may be alive now, but it wasn’t out of the woods yet. It was born prematurely, and small. Not to mention how his sibling might be doing. Mandy stroked the foal as it nipped at her gloves. She chuckled. A sweet one this one was.

Mandy’s attention snapped back to Clara and the vets as they screamed. The other foal was crowning, a little white head visible. It was six fifteen when Mandy finally checked the clock. Mandy clutched the foal in her arms, praying to god that his sibling wouldn’t be taken away from him.

The foal in her arms, the poor premature, unnamed foal, would need all the help he could get if he would survive.

The other foal popped out, and two vets attended to it. It was revealed that it was a filly, and even though it was smaller than the foal in Mandy’s hands, it had a hell of a lot more fight in it.

Her first breaths were taken quickly, leaving little to no question if she was alive or not.

Clara was a proud mother to the two frail foals. After they were born and she was checked out, she quickly forced Mandy and Julie, who were holding both foals, to let them go. She pinned her ears at them, until they backed away from her foals. Clara plopped down, and went right into mother duty, licking them and caring for them.

Only one vet stayed, Kelly. He wanted to ensure the safety of all the horses, and thus stayed outside of the stall watching Clara care for her new foals.

After the foals and Clara had gotten some rest, not to mention the vets, a few more vets came by. Kelly, with a sigh went to sleep on some hay bales claiming quote “I want to be here if anything happens.”

The foals seemed to be enjoying their new legs, standing up and walking, and of course, falling.

The owner, Bailey came by with a friend. They chatted as Clara watched them like a hawk with her foals. Bailey’s soft hand stroked the colt, whom she decided to name Ranger. Ranger was sweet with Bailey, nudging her and nibbling at her hands. By the look in Bailey’s eyes, you knew that if anything happened to either foal, she would be devastated.

Bailey’s friend, Amara, played with the filly. The filly was also sweet, but had a bit more of a devil in her than her brother. She’d run at you, to the best of her abilities, but had a sweet look. And once you were sitting down with her, she’d be as kind as her brother. Amara playfully suggested the name Haisley for her, and it stuck.

Ranger and Haisley were inseparable. Not even their mother could separate them. Trying to individually check them out for injuries was like trying to part the sea. Impossible and extremely exhausting.

A week down the line, it seemed that even though Ranger was the bigger one, and the colt, Haisley was the stronger one. She was the fighter of the two, and as they got older she was always the one creating some kind of mischief.

Eventually, once the foals were five months old, they had to be weaned. Neither Clara nor her foals were happy about this, neither was Bailey, but the vets suggested removing the foals from Clara. Besides, Clara’s owner wanted her back.

Finally on September second, when the foals were officially five months old, Clara was sent off back to her owner.

Ranger and Haisley were devastated. They would scream and cry at night, most of the people on property assumed they were making deals with the devil himself, because on September fourth Clara was sent back to the equine facility.

Her owner noticed a change in Clara that they didn’t like, and attributed it to being separated from her foals, thus sent her back hoping that would fix her.

Ranger and Haisley were beyond joy when they saw their mother. They gained strength and muscle through the next month, and on October second when they were officially six months old, an age the vets didn’t expect them to reach, Bailey held a large celebration on property.

Amara came back, visiting with the foals every now and again. The foals are doing well, and thriving considering their premature birth. Haisley is constantly causing trouble and mischief but as much as Bailey hates to admit it, she loves it. Bailey says it signals a strong foal, which is not something Haisley was physically. Ranger on the other hand is quite docile, and loves investigating new things. Bailey often finds Ranger cuddled up with a cat in the stall or when he’s out in the pasture.

Ranger and Haisley both still have a strong connection with their mother. It worries Bailey a bit, but as long as Clara can go back home when she needs to, she’s fine with it.
