I walked amongst the cold icy trees, my light brown coat not helping me blend in to my otherwise white surroundings. The wind howled as it rammed into my body. It was a winter wonderland, except for the freezing temperatures.

I heard a stick snap, and as I carefully turned my head I was met with a very handsome Loshenka.

“Wave.” He spoke, his voice rough. His brow raised as I stared at his mouth. His eyes flicked to mine. He seemed stressed to say the least.

“Oh uh, sorry. What were you saying?” I stuttered, feeling butterflies rush to my stomach.

“I said your name, that's all. It’s Wave right?” Laurier’s light purple eyes followed my own as I averted my gaze to the snow around us. The purple of his eyes matched the white of the snow beautifully. His muscular body stepped forward as I took a step back. He knows my name oh my god I think I’m going to die. “Are you afraid of me?” He mused, his jaw twitching. I couldn’t bear to look him in the eye.

“No.” I said, my gaze falling to the ground. It wasn’t entirely a lie.

“Prove it.” His voice turned hoarse as he spoke those two words. Meaningless words. They are meaningless. I told myself, trying not to be swayed by his beauty. But one could not lie, this stallion in front of me was jaw droppingly beautiful. His mane, long and stunningly plaited. His long tail flicked back and forth as much as he could move it as he waited for my eyes to reach his.

I stared into those stunning purple eyes. I couldn’t understand what he was feeling. Was he amused, maybe angry?

“How do you want me to prove it to you?” I asked, doing my best to shine confidence but the truth was I felt anything but confident near this absolute prize of a stallion.

“Figure it out.” He said before dropping his head and walking away. Figure it out. Figure it out my ass. How am I supposed to figure it out exactly?

I watched him walk, his tail flicking as if he expected something. Figure it out. Wait, figure it out could mean following him? But he wants me to prove I’m not afraid of him.

I walked away from him through the snow, the wind howling as I finally reached the clearing in the middle of the forest. My favorite place to sit and think.

I laid down in the middle, the snow under me making me colder, but helping me think clearer.

Backbiter, one of my good friends walked into the clearing.

“Wave?” She asked hesitantly as she got closer. “Wave what’s wrong?” She asked softly as she bent down to check on me.

“Nothing.” I lied with a sigh.

“Now you know that’s a lie.” She chuckled. “Come on, tell me what's wrong.” She begged. “I’m one of your closest friends, if I don’t know what's going on I can help you.” She argued when I turned my head away.

I stood up, shaking the snow off of me. “Backbiter, I love you but I need some space.” I tried to sound stern, but from the way she raised her brow and didn’t leave I could tell she saw right through me.

“No, what you need is a nice snack, and to stop overthinking.” She said with an odd look on her face.

“Like I said, I just need to be left alone.” I argued.

“By that look on your face I’d say a stallion wanted something.” She challenged. I shook my head.

“It’s not your business.” I growled.

“Oooh so I was right.” Backbiter chuckled. “Who was it?” She asked. My heart dropped as I saw him behind her, making his way through the snow filled clearing.

“Wave?” He asked hesitantly, stopping in his place. Most of the stallions feared Backbiter and for good reason.

“Laurier?” I called back. Backbiter whipped around. I saw a flash of fear in Laurier’s eyes, but it was gone in an instant.

“Are you the stallion who’s giving her trouble?” Backbiter asked, baring her teeth. Laurier looked from me to her, back to me.

“I didn’t realize I had given her trouble.” He said, searching my eyes for something as he took a few steps forward.

“Do you want him to come here?” Backbiter whispered. I nodded my head. Backbiter walked out of the clearing to give me and Laurier some space.

“Did I give you trouble?” He asked as he got closer, sending the butterflies in my stomach flying. I turned my gaze to the ground, not trusting myself to look him in the eyes.

“No.” I lied. Well kind of. He didn’t give me trouble in the way he thought he did.

“Well, your friend over there sure thinks I did. Did I?” He asked, his nose nudging my face up, his nose under my jaw. His eyes were so beautiful. Being around him made me feel like making a deal with the devil. Those purple eyes. “Did I?” He asked again, his brow drawing. I could feel his warm breath on my neck as he spoke. His jaw twitched again as he waited for an answer.

“No.” I lied yet again.

“Lair.” He growled, his soft worried eyes turning to rage. “What kind of trouble did I give you?” He demanded.

“The ‘Figure it out’ part.” I growled back in response. He backed away slightly, letting his nose fall from under my jaw. His hooves softly crunched the snow underhoof.

“Did I scare you?” He asked, his eyes full of hatred. I couldn’t tell if that was for me or himself.

“Can you just leave me alone?” I snapped. His eyes filled with worry as he took another step back.

“Sure.” He sighed, and walked into the forest with his head bowed.

Backbiter came in the clearing a while later.

“Everything good?” She asked hesitantly. I shook my head. “Do you want to talk about it?” She questioned as she got closer. I shook my head again. “Alright then, do you want me to leave you?” She asked until I could feel her breath on my nose. I nodded my head. With a quick nod, she briskly walked out of the clearing, glancing back a few times for whatever reason.

My mind raced. Had I messed this up that much? I didn’t want to make Wave fear me, so when she asked me to leave I said sure, and walked out of that clearing with my head bowed, leaving my pride and my future wife behind.

What she didn’t know is that me and Backbiter talked. Backbiter promised to check on her, as long as I leave, and honestly as much as I hate to admit it, Backbiter scares the shit out of me, so I left.

I walked solemnly through the woods, the wind nipping at my exposed nose. I hated leaving Wave behind, but Backbiter assured me it was the best thing to do. Backbiter was an odd mare. She wouldn’t hesitate to protect her friends, which I guess in some way is a good quality, but at the same time, her mother gave her the wrong name. She should have been named Anklebiter for how many ankles she’s bitten.

A friend of mine used to know her, but ran with his tail between his legs after she started herding him and nipping his ankles like a damn sheep dog.

The snow underhoof soaked into my fur on my legs. I shivered as I exited the forest, the wind practically sweeping me up.

I navigated my way to the stables as the wind kept howling. I could have sworn I heard someone call my name. As I looked around, I saw her. Her lean, smaller body exiting the forest. Wave.

Her brown eyes were mesmerizing, but they were full of fear and uncertainty. She was still moving towards me, but I helped her close the space.

The wind whipped as our heads got closer. “Wave.” I said with a smile, trying to appear charming.

“Laurier.” She said with more of a sigh. Where is this going? Does she already have a boyfriend? The wind whipped as she tried to keep talking, the wind taking her words before I could hear them.

“I can’t hear you.” I tried to shout. Even though we were so close, it was impossible to hear with the wind whipping around. Wave gave me a brisk nod, and walked past me to the stables. She's smart. I like that.

I followed behind her as the wind picked up. Snow mixed with the wind. Great, it was snowing now as well.

With a glance behind me, I saw Backbiter coming in as well, a sad and confused look on her face. That couldn’t be good. I moved a little faster, ensuring I was completely out of her lunging reach, just in case.

Wave was shaking off the snow when I finally reached the stables. Humans gathered around us, saying things like ‘the wilds’ and pointing at us. Wave had a nice look on her face. If she was relaxed then I should be too.

Backbiter came in, and as the humans got closer to her, she bared her teeth.

We, as the wilds, don’t typically come inside. Only when the weather is bad enough. The humans who own us are pretty cool with that, and let us be.
