Lune had spend days, weeks, searching the internet. Had stalked the adoption centre's website for more time than was healthy for anyone. She had just placed the tablet on the dining table, refreshing the website every few minutes, while having a few of the wide forest behind her house.
She wasn't even looking for a horse to ride on - but if the opportunity would present itself, she wouldn't hesitate either - but the first goal was to create a stable herd for a few horses to live in.
Lune was in the last year of her university study, and for her final essay, she had chosen to write on horse behaviour. A choice no one in her class was surprised about.
She had worked through late nights, keeping a notebook next to her laptop to write down possible horses that would make a good, solid start. Along with the bag of dice she had aquired earlier from the fortune wheel, she had to make a small gamble that the horses would be fit for each other.
Just as she was about to go to bed, she refreshed the website one last time, and that was when the horse popped up.
A beautiful, silver black mare, with a large blaze on her head that leaked around her nose. Three white feet. She was perfect.
Lune wasn't thinking, already typing in the phonenumber of the adoption centre, before she realised the time. On the other hand, the horse had just been uploaded, so someone was awake and working.
Lune dialed the number, and waited with shallow breaths, but the phone was picked up.
"Hi - I am so sorry to call on this time, but I just noticed the ad for the silverblack mare."
"That's alright dear, don't worry. Yes, she's gorgeous, isn't she. Would you be willing to come around in the next days, to meet her?"
And just like that, the two women settled on tomorrow, at the earliest opportunity she got.
Lune had trouble sleeping that night, but that was to be expected, ofcourse. She kept turning, and had barely closed her eyes at all, when the sun was creeping up the horizon again. Well. Sleep was for the weak.
The woman got herself up, showered and pushed some food inside, before getting in the car and driving towards the adoption centre.
As she arrived, the woman Lune spoke over the phone, was already standing at the porch, waiting for her.
"Hi, so nice you could come over so quick. My name is Melanie, nice to meet you."
"Lune, likewise!" Melanie had already started walking, gesturing for Lune to follow her. They walked past the stables, were volunteers were already bringing horses out from to stables, to the paddocks or pastures. The silverblack mare was spotted by Lune in an instant.
"She's beautiful."
"She is," Melanie nodded. "There is just one thing. We aren't sure how much she had been handled with her previous owners. We are not completely sure if she's healthy - other than what we can see from the outside."
Lune took a breath and nodded. Not being handled wasn't a problem, but she had to make sure the horse was healthy, ofcourse. That she didn't carry any underlying sickness that could affect the other horses.
The horse trotted towards the fence of her pasture, eyeing the two woman that took an interest in her.
"What about this, you can get her for no fee, and if anything is seriously wrong, we can always look if we can take her back, or somehow split the costs."
Lune looked at Melanie with surprise. One thing was certain, the horse wasn't going back once Lune had her. And, the woman had always had a good amount of luck. Surely, it wouldn't run out now.
"I'll take her." Lune replied with a smile, and Melanie chuckled as she layed a hand on Lune's shoulder.
"Wonderfull. Follow me inside, so we can finish the paperwork."
Lune followed her inside, and Melanie splayed out multiple forms on her desk, along with the passport of the horse. She didn't have a lineage, she explained - or they atleast haven't made aware that she had. Lune nodded as the woman explained the adoption fee - that she would cancel for Lune - and the responsibilities that would come with owning a horse.
"Although I get a feeling you know all about that." Melanie chuckled. Lune nodded with a smile.
"I do. But I'm - for now at least - mainly interested in creating a herd for my thesis, for univeristy."
"Interesting, what do you study?"
"Zoology." Lune answered with a smile, Melanie nodded in understanding. "I'm sure she will be a good fit. Maybe she will relax a little under natural circumstances. I'm sure she will turn out to be a wonderful horse."
As Lune signed the papers, they went back outside.
"Did you bring a trailer with you?" Melanie asked. Lune looked at her with big eyes.
"I - well - no - I didn't think I could bring her with me right away."
Melanie chuckled. "Usually that's not the case indeed. You could borrow one of hours. I think it's best for the mare if she's going to a stable environment as soon as possible." Lune nodded and one of the volunteers was ready to help her set up the trailer to her car, and back it all up to right in front of the pasture.
"Alright, everyone ready?" They had barricaded every inch the mare could slip through, had prepared hay, food, treats leading into the trailer. Now just hoping it would go smoothly, and the mare could enjoy her new home.
