2. Werepups

Quiet howls disturbed a peaceful night in the pastures for the young Maycee. The foal looked up at her mother, who in turn was looking in the direction of the forest.

Had the howls come from there?

After a moment the older mare relowered her head and continued grazing. Her young daughter, however, did not. Maybe the sound had been a cry of help, one this young filly could not ignore. With careful steps she walked to the fence. The oakwood looked strong. No adult horse would think of breaking it. The small Maycee inspected it for a moment. Then decided she could easily step through two bars. Before she knew it she was on the other side of the fencing.

She had to be quick; her mother might be enjoying the grass now, soon she would discover her daughter wasn’t near anymore. With that in the back of her head, the dark filly began to triple through the woods. Listening in the hopes of hearing the howls again. The young adventure seeker was in luck, for soon after she heard the sound again. It sounded more like a cry for help than one of attack. A careful walk later, Maycee arrived in a clearing. The pine trees looking a little dark and gloomy. She winnied. Maybe whatever had howled would respond?

It did. It seemed like the sound came from a hole in the ground. The moonlight shone upon the filly and whatever was wriggling in that hole. Slowly, Maycee walked closer. Lowering her head, she stepped closer. Then quickly jumped backwards as a small but furry head popped out of the hole. What was that? Too stunned to speak or move, she just stared at the animal.

A puppy, it looked some sort of puppy.

Maycee blew out a breath through her nostrils. Was the young animal lost? Did it need a friend? She could be a friend, she loved friends! The canine in turn wagged it’s tail.

It was settled, from then on Maycee had a new very furry friend. Together they made their way back to the pasture, once arrived both fell asleep on the soft ground.
